Project Runway Season 2 designer Santino Rice was featured prominently in Episode 6 of the VH1 reality program 'America's Most Smartest Model.' This is a fun show and this episode is especially cute because the contestants get to be fashion designers using geometry; Santino gets a lot of respect from these models and shows that he knows his way around a protractor. Enjoy part of the episode here!

BPR Field Reporter Extraordinaire, John Patsais brings us this wonderful report from the "Bad Boys of the Runway" event in San Francisco. Thanks again, John P, and thanks also to Marc Huestis for inviting us along!

In the City by the Bay, known all over the world for its open-mindedness to everything from politics to fashion, the fashionistas, pop culture enthusiasts, poseurs, and curiosity-seekers of San Francisco were treated to a display of glamorous and cutting edge fashions this past Friday evening. The famous Castro Theater served as a haven for fashion fans who were treated to dazzling displays of sartorial genius and unbridled ingenuity via classic film clips as well as contemporary designers and local drag artistes. In this “anything goes” city, a fashion designer with an “outside the box” mentality, vision, passion, and cutting edge aesthetic could very well find success. Project Runway alums Santino Rice and Jeffrey Sebelia may have very well found a second home outside of Los Angeles, judging by the reception they received from San Francisco locals during the “Bad Boys of the Runway” event. Host Marc Huestis led the panel discussion, and we were quickly reminded why Rice and especially Sebelia have duly earned their reputations.

It was getting late and still no Santino. I kept checking the entrance and at last, there he was! He was exactly as you would expect: lean and tall and wearing a hat. I greeted him and brought him up to our group. Nick and David were still there and honestly, I didn't sense any animosity between Santino and Nick at all. They gladly posed for photos with one of the "hopefuls" who was still with us. (Sorry, I don't want to jinx things for the designer by posting the photos - hope you'll understand.) The Top Design folks had left by then and Kaitlin and Dan were tired too, but we did pose for a "family photo" before they left:

Nick and David took off and I had a very nice LONG talk with Santino. He was really excited about the opportunities that he has had to travel throughout Asia representing Project Runway. He visited Singapore, Malaysia, Taiwan and Thailand in a 6-week tour. He told me that Project Runway airs on the Discovery Channel in Asia. At one of his appearances, the reporter expressed regret that Santino "wasn't meaner." He also had the opportunity to visit his brother who is living in Thailand.
Santino has also been lecturing at several Fashion Schools (most recently at FIT in NYC) about the Industry. He has been giving advice to aspiring designers and answering their questions. It never fails that they ask for a Tim Gunn impression or a song. He is happy to comply.
Santino seems cheerful and busy. It was nice to catch up with him. I did remember to ask him some fun questions:
Q: In season one, who left too soon?
A: Austin Scarlett
Q: Who was your favorite?
A: Kara Saun
Q: Season two, who left too soon?
A: John Wade
Q: Who was your favorite?
A: Andrae. I went to his dance performance and it was really great.
Q; Season three, who left too soon?
A: Keith Michael
Q: Who was your favorite?
A: Jeffrey.
Santino was also greeted by some adoring fans. He was very gracious.
I noticed that he brought a little gift bag and I wondered what was inside. It was an autographed copy of the season two DVD! Santino was friendly, outgoing and generous. It was a great evening!

BPR Halloween Contest: Grand Prize Winner
4:07 AM
amora

The judges have spoken: marzipan costumes for a Black Forest production of the Nutcracker? Of course! Inspired by a design that Santino Rice barely escaped the runway with, our Grand Prize winner found the perfect venue to make the look "aesthetically pleasing":
Hey Team BPR, My name is Nicole and I'm a 20 year old Graphic Design major at Austin Peay State University in Clarksville, TN. [I figure you should know my age since the costume is a tad on the scandalous side...].
I've been a truly dedicated PR fan since episode 1 season 1. I spent all last week thinking about and constructing my costume, trying to get every detail in there. From all the trims to the crazy makeup... I know some colors aren't exact but hopefully it's overwhelmingly obvious what I was going for.
I used my late Nana's model form she used to make clothes on, but since I'm more of a graphic designer than a fashion designer most of the things are glued. Everything you see was done by me [except for an old bra and underwear set, which I built the costume on] but other than that the whole costume, hair, makeup, and photography was done by me.
Here are my pictures of me as Shannon in the Team Lingerie challenge from season 2. Carry on! ~Nicole Geldart
Judges?
Andrae: I just loved this one. Team Lingerie. It survived on the show for it's original point of view, and this BPR reader gets my vote here for the same reason. For me, this is what Project Runway is all about: giving people a forum to be creative, and standing back to marvel at what they come up with. It's all too easy to get your girlfriend to write "Detroit" on your neck with a sharpie. How many of you know where to find red 1/4" pompoms by the yard in your home town? Good Job.
Nick: Accurate styling, design and make-up! Instantly recognizable to the "inner circle" of die-hard Project Runway fan! Did she bid on Emmett's design and then wore it? Inquiring minds want to know.
Emmett: Congratulations to Nicole, Winner of the BPR Halloween contest, and the other winners, you are all IN!
I am partial to the winning creation as Nicole followed all the precise construction techniques in assembling it as I did in the original outfit per Santino's explicit design direction.
HOT GLUE ALL THE WAY.
Nina, Nick and I are vindicated that Nicole also saw this ensemble as a costume and not as lingerie.
Congratulations Nicole! You've won a year's supply of TRESemme' hair care products, a set of new ceramic ionic hair brushes and a Season 2 DVD, all courtesy of our friends at TRESemmé.
We had many great entries, check back tomorrow to see our 4th and 5th place finishers as well as a slide show of all the costumes.

Kayne Gillaspie will be judging "Project High Way" in Norman Oklahoma. Thanks Val.
Meanwhile, we have 44 entries into our Halloween contest. Just as a little hint of what is included I'll tell you that we have fifteen Jeffreys! I'm glad I'm not a judge...

Since there will be finale viewing parties all across the country this Wednesday, we thought we could - with your help - offer up some serving suggestions.
Perhaps a confetti cake or simply a basket of nuts to honor Vincent? (He's a minimalist, you know.) How about a fleurchon-encrusted cake baked in a rosette pan for Angela? Let's be creative and have fun with this project.

Just wanted to say thanks for all your coverage of the show and all its goings on.
Jeff's been one of my best friends since I met him in rehab in 1990 and played bass in our band Lifter. My girlfriend Fainche and I have been strung out on PR since its inception so we were overwhelmed when we found out Jeff was on this season.
We've been having viewing parties at my house all season. This last wednesday we had 50 people as it was Jeff's last chance to view. All four will be in New York next week.
So, it's been pretty great and we're all really proud of Jeff and quite amused at how he's been portrayed in the show. While he definitely speaks his mind, he's hardly the guy you see on the show.
Anyway, here are a few pics from the party including some amazing cakes that our friends Laurie and Emily made. You'll definitely recognize them.
So thanks again and talk to you soon.
Mike

BPR Top 5 Looks: 4th Place

It was no surprise to learn that Jeffrey Sebelia and Santino Rice were friends. The two Los Angeles-based designers share many similarities. Supremely self-confident, Jeffrey has the Santino-like penchant to talk himself into trouble. This would quickly earn him the title as Season 3's bad boy. Also like Santino, he has the "mad skillz" to come up with some stunning designs.
In Couture du Jour, the six remaining designers were presented with a formidable challenge: create an evening dress that incorporated couture methods in its construction. It would also have to travel well as the judging would take place both in Paris and New York. With just two days to finish and 300 euros to spend, Jeffrey decided to be bold.
He selected a combination of yellow plaids and tartans that didn't look like much on the dressform. But it sure came to life on his models. Guest judge Catherine Malandrino wrote "Magnifique!" on her scorecard, surrounded by stars. "More than anything, I want people to just smile when they look at this gown," Jeffrey would go on to say.
Freed creatively by immunity and receiving a big assist from his model Marilinda's attitude and convincing walk on the runway, this hand-sewn dress brought Jeffrey his second straight win. It was a winner in our poll too, finishing fourth in the BPR Top 5 looks from Season 3. Congratulations Jeffrey!
