Alternative material challenges always seem to bring out the best in the designers every season of Project Runway. From the grocery store to the candy shop to the auto parts bin, these challenges have produced some of the most creative results on the runway. Andy South certainly proved that point again in Episode 3, "It's a Party".
This early on in Season 8, we hardly knew who was who. Gretchen ran away with the first two wins and we weren't quite sure who else had the designing chops to go deep in the competition. The 14 remaining designers were tasked with creating a design using only party supplies from the fabulously tacky "Party Glitters" store.
Andy spent the first half of his day trying to figure out what to do. He spray painted tulle and party favors and experimented with cellophane. He ultimately settled on using black ribbon as his primary source of material. He both folded and braided the ribbon into a paper crane design, creating a very sophisticated party dress that wowed the judges. This would become Andy's signature technique, eventually using it in his last fashion week challenge that won him a spot in final 3.
Andy took home his first win with this dress, broke Gretchen's winning streak and established himself as a serious contender. Will he take home the big prize Thursday night? We'll have to wait for that but for now he has found a spot on the BPR Top 5 Looks of Season 8. Congratulations Andy!

BPR Field Report: Heidi Klum's HKNB Launch Party
11:08 AM
amora
BPR was thrilled to be invited to the launch party for Heidi Klum's New Balance line and Manhattan-based field reporter Kenda Nunez graciously covered the event for us - thank you Kenda!
Heidi Klum launched her new activewear collection on Thursday, Oct. 7th, 2010 in New York City’s Cedar Lake Dance Studio. The Heidi Klum for New Balance line will be sold exclusively through Amazon.
The event started with the red carpet arrivals where Ms. Klum appeared and the crowd of photographers went crazy, she was wearing a short, backless dress and looked amazing as always! There was a great number of past and present Project Runway designers providing support for Heidi, some of these included Jason Troisi, Peach Carr, Andy South, Ivy Higa, Nicholas, D’Aurizio, Emilio Sosa, Anthony Williams, Carol Hannah Whitfield, Kenley Collins, and Ben Chmura. Some of the current models on the show were also in attendance as well as pop star Kat DeLuna.
After arrivals and cocktails the crowd was introduced the HKNB active wear line by a fun show of fitness models who were jumping/dancing on a trampoline and floor pads, all while wearing the line’s comfortable outfits. The launch was directly tied to this week’s episode of Project Runway where the designers were challenged to create 3 outfits for her new active wear line.
Heidi introduced the audience to an uninterrupted screening of the episode; she was really excited to show her comfortable side and told us that she loves to shop on Amazon. At the end of the episode when the winner was announced, the entire crowd clapped for Andy’s victory, it was great to see his humble reaction!

Andy's Hoodie
7:03 AM
amora

A number of readers have commented about the striking resemblance of the front design on Andy South's hoodie to lululemon's signature logo. Here's one example of lululemon's popular activewear jackets. You be the judge:

It's hard not to be inspired by what you see and know in the design world, but doesn't Andy's hoodie look like a direct copy of the lululemon logo? Surely the judges noticed this but we never see him being called out on it (not even in the extended judging video).
Interestingly, that design element seems to have disappeared from the final product line that went up for sale on Amazon last night. Our guess is that he did get called out on it but the judges looked past that obvious knock off pattern and awarded him the win based on the overall quality of his construction and design. What do you think?
